Eight Fashion Trends That Have (Thankfully) Come and Gone
Fashion is an industry in which things happen and change very quickly. The trends we see for one season are, more often than not, gone by the next. Some of your favorite trends in seasons and years past may not have lasted very long, while ones that you didn’t particularly care for have seemed to stick around forever.
But just because your favorite trend had a huge moment in the past, doesn’t necessarily mean it was great or that it should go down in fashion history as one of the greats. In fact, many trends that we knew and loved in the past should never resurface again.
I know everyone can think of a trend that they loved back in the day, but are now ashamed to admit. Here are eight fashion trends that have (thankfully) come and gone.
Sock Buns
It seems this hairstyle started getting popular around the same time that Pinterest really took off, which makes sense. Pinterest is stock full of do-it-yourself beauty tutorials so the sock bun gained a lot of popularity. They are a simple beauty routine that just about anyone can do so the draw was there.
Unfortunately the sock bun gives you an almost too perfect, coiffed look and essentially makes you look like a ballerina. Do yourself a favor and throw this contraption in the trash.
Ed Hardy
The Ed Hardy brand just makes me cringe. The graphic designs that mimic tattoo art that are all over Ed Hardy t-shirts, pants and yes, god-forsaken trucker hats elicit nausea and disgust.
And the fact that Jon Gosselin, as in the scumbag dad in “Jon and Kate Plus 8,” was often seen photographed plastered in Ed Hardy, doesn’t help this trend one bit. Forget throwing out your Ed Hardy stuff–just burn it.
Wedge Sneakers
It is a walking shoe? Or a heel? Apparently it’s both. This trend isn’t just unattractive, but it also simply doesn’t make sense. Sneakers are meant for comfortable walking; adding a wedge is impractical, not to mention ugly.
If you want to take your casual look up a notch, add a real pair of heels or wedges, not wedge sneakers.
Fanny Packs
Fanny packs remind me of shows like Full House as well as annoying tourists. And I don’t know about you, but who wants their style to be synonymous with either of those things?
This horrendous excuse for a purse/bag had its shining moment in the 80’s and 90’s. It should have stayed there, but in the past few years, “chic” versions of fanny packs have been making a comeback.
Printed Leggings
Animal print. Galaxy print. Cat print. You name it, and I’m positive you can find it printed on a pair of leggings. Herein lies the problem with these atrocities. Some prints just aren’t meant to be on a pair of “pants.”
It’s obnoxious and tacky, so do everyone a favor and stick to plain black.
Skinny Jeans/Baggy Jeans for Men
I think I can speak for most women out there when I say that we get really uncomfortable when a man is sporting tighter jeans than we are. Likewise, super baggy jeans that don’t stay on are just as bad.
There is a happy medium out there, guys! A fitted pair of jeans will make you and every woman out there much happier than your skinny skater and baggy rapper-esque ones.
Harem Pants
Harem pants were made popular by MC Hammer in the late 80’s and are actually making a comeback in fashion once again. However, just as we saw a decline in the popularity of these parachute pants back in the 90’s, I think it’s safe to say they will once again become a fashion faux pas in the near future.
Admittedly, this trend can actually be chic, but the harem pants with the crotch near your knees or lower have got to go ASAP.
Crosses
Crosses on shirts. Crosses on bracelets. Crosses on leggings. Crosses on EVERYTHING. Fun fact: this trend actually originated with famous designer Riccardo Tisci in his Fall/Winter 2013 show where he featured famous religious icons on all of his designs. All of his designs in this show were gorgeous, and of course the rest of the world saw this and ran with it.
Thus, we have crosses and other religious icons on virtually any clothing imaginable. Unfortunately because of this, this trend went from super chic to obnoxious, repetitive and in need of termination.
As hard as it may be to accept, not every fashion trend is meant to last forever. These eight fashion trends are testament to that. These appalling trends have thankfully been on the decline in recent years, but will undoubtedly be replaced by some other awful trend in the months to come.
But don’t be ashamed of how many of these you used to wear; we’re all guilty of a fashion faux pas from time to time.
