Why Selecting a Random Roommate Was the Best Decision Ever

By Lorena Roberts on January 24, 2016

I’m tickled pink to be back on campus after a very long winter break with my very best friend. We met last August, on move-in day. I don’t know that we were expecting to become best friends, I think we were just hoping we didn’t hate each other’s guts. But now that we’ve made it through an entire semester together and we’re back for a second before we move into the coolest apartment ever together, I’ve come to realize that my roomie is my best friend. Choosing a random roommate for sophomore year was the best decision ever.

I know, I know. They tell you not to room with your best friend. But what about when you randomly select each other and become instant life partners? Some people probably think we’re lesbians, and they question the fact that we’re together so much, but I don’t care. She’s my best friend. I can tell her anything.

For starters, I get to tell my best friend goodmorning as soon as I wake up, and it’s the fastest way ever to put me in a great mood. She always has something funny to say, and the morning usually proceeds with laughs as we go through the routine of getting ready and talking about our dreams the night before. It’s a blast to wake up six feet away from the greatest person you’ve ever met. I highly recommend this.

Another great perk– I never come home to an empty room. Neither does she. And if either one of us does, we immediately text each other, “where r u? miss you boo. come home.” because it’s just way too dang tough to be without each other.

We take classes together; therefore we share notes and textbooks (holla!). So I’m pretty sure that’s two A’s we can go ahead and count on.

Her friends are my friends, and my friends are her friends. She’s given me the best gift ever– the gift of a social life. Without my roommate, I’d be a loner…a hermit…

She’s my other half. I was never someone who made a lot of really close friends. I always had acquaintances, and a few close friends in high school, but I never had anyone that was really my “person.” You know, like Meredith and Christina. I needed a person when I came to college. And now that I’m a sophomore, I’ve found her.

So here’s to you, roomie. For making this year one I’ll never forget (already!) and for promising to never ever leave me and to be a Golden Girl with me forever.
