Every Day is Earth Day

By Chloe Skaar on April 25, 2017

Our home needs help.

Our home needs attention.

Our home needs some pretty big changes. Right now.

Which seems like a simple request, sitting in my front yard with the Midwestern sun on my shoulders and freshly potted petunias to keep me company.

But this is no minor feat. Earth is massive, yet larger still is the amount of human behavior that results in its destruction.

We obsess over decorated homes and spotless cars, yet find it tedious to clean up sidewalks and parks.

We have built billion dollar industries with the sole motivation of improving the human appearance, but recycling still sometimes seems far-fetched.

When it rains, we fret over our curling hair before we thank Mother Nature for quenching the thirst of trees and plants that provide the air we breathe.

We use our paychecks to worship oil companies and corporations that use landfills, dump waste materials into our water supply and burn through limited fossil fuels.

The very same corporations will use their reduce, reuse, and recycling habits as an advertising and promotional technique. And it will actually work.

We charge people money to recycle, for crying out loud.

I am encouraging you, dear reader, to invest a little heart and soul, the kind that is thoughtlessly given to mundane tasks of daily life, into our beautiful place of residence.

Acts of kindness for the planet, if you will. Picture the warm fuzzies you feel when doing this for other humans, but on a planet-sized scale.

Make it a goal to literally stop and smell the flowers each day and remember to pick up one piece of litter every time you do.

Collect rainwater and use it for watering plants. Additionally, plant a ton of plants. Everywhere.

Save a bug instead of squashing it.

Lay in the grass and breathe in fresh air and make a promise to yourself and the grass to swear off everything Styrofoam, forever.

I truly believe you will find that actions done for the good of the environment are good for your soul, too.

I don’t think “love thy neighbor” simply refers to the family living next door. It also includes the bird’s nest in the highest branches of your shade tree, the bumblebee that delights in your yard work, and the bright green grass that cheerfully notifies us of summertime.

Keep your neighbors close at heart. We are all living in the same home, after all.
