Breaking Dawn Part II: The Twilight Saga Ends

By Abby Kutscher on November 26, 2012

The third weekend in November marked the release for the final chapter of the “Twilight” saga. Based on Stephenie Meyer’s best selling series, the “Twilight” films have been steadily released since 2008. Like the books, the movies have been popular with thousands of fans, commonly nicknamed Twihards.

This final movie follows the second half of the last novel “Breaking Dawn.” It picks up immediately after Edward has bitten Bella. Bella has just given birth to their daughter and the intensity of the birth nearly killed her, requiring Edward to give her the bite that would transform her into a vampire. Bella awakes with heightened senses and a taste for blood. Meanwhile, Jacob has imprinted on newborn Renesmee. He will do anything to protect her, and she is going to need the protection. The Volturi vampires believe that Renesmee is an immortal child, an illegal creation in the vampire world. Thus, the Volturi sets out to correct things. When Alice sees this in a vision of the future, the Cullens scour the world for witnesses who will stand with them against the Volturi.

Fans everywhere have long awaited this final release. The movie grossed 141.3 million dollars in its opening weekend (www.cnn.com)! But were fans disappointed? The answer seems to be undecided. Many have claimed that this final installment was their favorite of the film series. Personally, I was disappointed in the lack of character development with Renesmee. When I read the book, I fell in love with her character. And in the movie, the entirety of the plot revolves around her existence… yet she is basically just a bystander.

Furthermore, the CGI involved with this character was frankly disappointing. It looked very fake and sometimes there even seemed to be CGI involved with the older character of Renesmee which made no sense. As an infant, Renesmee obviously couldn’t be portrayed by an actor because she was born with a full set of teeth and a mature range of facial expressions and emotions. But what was the purpose of having the older Renesmee portrayed by both actress Mackenzie Foy and CGI technology? Also, the movie never disclosed what explanation Bella gave to her father regarding the rapid development of Renesmee.

However, with that said, most fans will agree the final battle scene of the film was mesmerizing. I won’t spoil it for all of you readers who haven’t seen it yet, but wow! If you are even the slightest bit a fan of the saga, this scene will force a reaction. After all, it is the end of not only the movie, but of the saga and of an era.
