The Text Message That Made My Day

I was on a four hour flight back home to Las Vegas, the city of sin, at 7:00 a.m. Exhausted out of my mind after only sleeping two hours the night before my flight, the excitement of being able to curl up in my own bed and never waking up ever again sounded like the best thing in the world. That is, until I turned my phone off of Airplane Mode and found a text from a guy I met during orientation my freshman year. At first, I thought he had texted the wrong number or that it was the usual drunk text that happened to be sent to my number that night. But instead it was this: “Not positive, but I’m pretty sure I saw you Thursday night…just wanted to say hey and hope you’re doing well!” My day was automatically made, and it wasn’t because finally some guy wanted to talk to me!

And that’s when it hit me…the people that you meet and interact with every day are more important than you think. Even though I haven’t seen or talked to this guy for over a year, it was the thought that truly mattered.  It’s true, you’ll meet people every single day in college. It might be slightly intimidating when you go to such a huge university. But when someone you may have only talked to once a long time ago decides to text you in the spur of the moment, you can’t help but feel special when they are reminded of you in a crowd of 50,000 plus students they see every day.

So my challenge to you ladies and gentlemen is to text/Facebook message/call someone that you haven’t talked to in a while, even if it’s a friend or classmate from high school, and ask them how everything is going. It may be a little random, but trust me when I say that those little random things can make a big difference in someone’s day.
