Cuckoo for Converse: The Everlasting Shoe Style
I normally could not care less about shoe brands. If I need a pair of flats or heels, I go for the cheapest shoes that fit and usually purchase them at a thrift store or Wal-Mart. However, four years ago, on a cold and snowy day, I fell in love with one specific brand: Converse.
Yes, I remember my trip to Journeys at the Dayton Mall, where I purchased my first pair of Converse All Stars shoes; I remember the way the Chucks felt when the under-enthusiastic attendant guided my foot into first one deep purple sneaker and then the other. I can recall the high-topped cloth gripping my ankle, reassuring my feet that they would be protected. Don’t shake your head as you read this; if you own a pair of converse, you know exactly what I mean.
Converse shoes are awesome. Sure, they have their drawbacks (for example, they suck in the snow), but these are a small price to pay for the comfort and originality the shoes offer. I would wear this brand with any outfit I own and for any occasion. Even the entire cast I was a part of for a production of the musical Godspell wore Converse (see first picture). Why? Because these shoes have become extremely popular and everlasting throughout a surprising number of years.
I was surprised to find out that the Converse brand has been around since 1908; does this shock anyone else? In its beginnings, Converse attached itself first to basketball and then to Rock and Roll. This brand is associated with originality, creativity and a rebellious spirit. To me, this is exactly why Converse shoes are still around—over a century later and people still sport the Converse brand. As culture changes, the versatility of the Converse shoe shines brightly; not only are there a variety of colors and patterns, but there are also a variety of styles and shapes, and if these do not suit you, you can create your own pair. The multitude of options that Converse offers ensures its continued survival.
In addition to my purple Chucks, I own a hot pink and a navy blue pair. While I joined the Converse bandwagon a little late, I would never turn back now; these shoes have become a part of me, as weird as that may sound. I predict that Converse will never go out of style. There is a sort of vibe and personality associated with Converse, and it claims a spirit that will never die. Normally, if you told me you spent $70 on shoes, I would cry for you; however, if you told me those shoes were Converse, you’d get a high five.
The website converse.com best sums up why Converse will continue to grow and evolve: “ The best stories are the ones that don’t end — the ones you just keep adding to and adding to — all the while marveling at the creative, disruptive, optimistic, courageous ways things evolve from being what they were, to what they are, to what they will become.”
