5 Great Places to Go in Lansing

By Andy Beaudoin on May 26, 2013

Let’s face it. Sometimes it’s nice to get out of the college neighborhoods of East Lansing and see what else is just down the road.

If you take the number 1 bus or the entertainment express, you’ll be on Michigan Avenue which has many different places to stop for the weekend or any other day of the week!

Here’s a list of 5 personal favorites. Check ‘em out!

The Loft

One of the up-and-coming live music venues in the city, the Loft has steadily improved the music scene in Lansing for the last couple of years. With plenty of space and a full bar, it’s a great place to go to almost any night of the week. When it gets packed, the bands are energized and the room is alive. I recommend a Friday night. Prices are a little much, but usually worth the cost of seeing 3 or 5 quality bands.

The Soup Spoon Cafe

A neat little bistro and bar, the Soup Spoon Cafe is one of the most original and cozy restaurants on the strip. The line is typically long, but it’s well worth the wait as there is a full bar available while you’re waiting.  The food is delicious and uniquely its own. Perfect for dates.

The Green Door

Like live jazz and blues? Stop no further than the Green Door. It has great musicians coming through six days a week with plenty of room for you to get your dancing on. A full bar and open late, it’s a hot spot for Lansing natives.

Avenue Cafe

One of the largest coffee shops/restaurants/bar/music venues on the strip, Avenue cafe (formerly Gone Wired cafe) has an atmosphere that is unmatched. The place is so big on the inside (with two stories even) that a large group of people could be on one side of the room, and you’d still be able to study peacefully at the other end. There are board games and books nearly everywhere. Great burritos, and they’ve most recently gotten a liquor license.

Stobers

“The oldest bar in Lansing,” Stobbers is incredibly cozy, but also really cool on the inside. It’s worth visit for the interior itself. There’s this enormous hand-carved mirror thing which you can kind of see in the artist rendition, but you should check it out for yourself. If you’re feeling competitive, check out the two shuffle board lanes while you drink a few bruskees with your friends.
