Scooby Dooby Doo, I Have no Time for You - How Students Balance a Lack of Entertainment Time

By Joely Friedman on November 12, 2013

When one makes the decision to become a full time student, they are making the decision to give up many of their creature comforts. Some of those comforts that we are forced to say farewell to are sleep, adequate nutrition, part of our sanity, and TV.

Oh TV. Clearly the most detrimental sacrifice of them all. I wont lie to you, it is a daily struggle for me to cope with the harsh reality that my TV time is no more. During my days as a high schooler, TV was all I did.

As if not having the time to watch TV isn’t bad enough, I also find myself lacking the time to read for pleasure– a favorite pastime of mine.

There is an unbelievable amount of reading that students must do on a nightly basis just to keep up with their classes. Having time to read beyond that seems impossible.

I have been reading the first book in the Game of Thrones series for over four months now. I am not even half way through and I am what most people would consider a fast reader.

There are certainly a myriad of reasons why people go to college. But not amongst those reasons is the amount of spare time that you will have.

Since our free time is very limited in college, we must adapt to finding hobbies that take up littler chunks of time than watching TV shows or reading chapters for pleasure on end.

After talking with many fellow college students, it seems unanimous that most of us have adapted to spending our little amounts of free time by doing something social on our computers.

This makes sense, doesn’t it? Our few chunks of free time are usually no more than a half an hour or so, if that. Not enough time to become enthralled in a good book or watch the latest episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians.

And since we always have our computers by our side, what better way to relax then to do some Pinning or Redditing? Checking up on social media sites does not require large chunks of time. It’s easy to do and it takes the mind off of the stresses of school. Plus, most social medias allow us to be having fun and communicating with friends quickly between classes.

One of the biggest transitions to becoming a full time college students is learning how to spend your time wisely and as efficiently as possible. Procrastinating is a high school habit that dies quickly in college. Unfortunately, watching TV goes hand in hand with that behavior.

So as we change our habits to increase our chances of success, finding new hobbies is necessary because our structure of free time changes drastically.

Moral of the story: if you are a college student struggling to find enjoyable ways to spend your twenty minute chunks of free time, I highly suggest getting a?Pinterest?or?Reddit?account.
