6 Fashion-Forward Hair Styles For Fall

By Sarah Christine Davis on September 16, 2015

As the leaves change, so do the most fashion-forward hair styles.

However, a typical summer fad has extended into the new season. The common thread throughout this fall’s most stylish looks is messy. What a convenient excuse to wake up a little bit later on your busy fall semester days!

The natural look has been pushed for a while now, but this fall it’s really taking charge. Check out a few ways to embrace this trend – with a surprise at the end!

1. Get low.

Don’t you hate it when your last-minute morning ponytail starts falling out from running around all day? Now you don’t have to.

One thing that the ponytails that we’re seeing from labels like Dior and Carolina Herrera have in common is that they are all low. While this look is simpler and more laid back than a high ponytail, it’s also low-key sophisticated and less reminiscent of your cheerleading practice days.

You can let the hair tie hang lower than you normally would and tease the upper portion of the ponytail, as seen with Michael Kors. Conversely, you can accent the ponytail with a French twist as seen with Hervé Leger, or keep it sweet, straight, and simple as seen with Nicole Miller. However you decide to style it, you can’t go wrong with a low ponytail this season.

2. Hun, you look beautiful.

You’ve probably seen this all around your campus. The abbreviated version of a “half bun,” the hun is a hot new hair trend that’s appropriate both for your internship and for recovering from Saturday night in style.

The Metro calls this genius new hair style “the beauty world’s sneaky way of making a lazy day hair style seem cool.” What more could you want?

The hun is the rare hair style that both celebrities and us normal folk can pull off without a lot of time and effort. Like the low ponytail, the hun can be styled to your preference depending on your hair length and where you’re going.

3. Fine leather goods.

Embrace your inner rebel with some chic leather hair accessories. Whether it’s in the form of a headband as seen with Fendi, unique hair tie as seen with Tanya Taylor, or otherwise, leather hair accessories have dominated the runways this season.

Accessories can make or break your outfit and transform it into a totally different style, and your hair is the perfect place to take advantage of this fact. According to the experts at Fashionisers.com, leather has been everywhere lately in different forms, especially handbags and shoes; why not take the unexpected route and use it in your hair?

4. Twist it and tie it.

You only need to put in a little bit of effort to look stylish with this trendy look. This is perfect for an internship or other professional job that you may have. A key to this new messy twist is to have pieces that don’t fit perfectly into the hair tie, as evidenced by models for designers such as Diane von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham.

You can also embrace the trend in the form of the very similar tie knot, which is basically a more fun version of buns. Harper’s Bazaar differentiates between the bun and the knot with the statement, “Buns are labored over; knots are thrown together when you’re having too much fun to care about your hair.”

This reinforces the idea that casual, effortless looks are in this fall. Marissa Webb and Veronique Leroy have executed the messy tie knot perfectly.

5. Messy in the middle.

The middle part has been making a comeback for a while now, but it was especially prominent on the runways of the recent New York Fashion Week.

However, this part is taking a different route than it previously has. Whereas this look used to afford a strict, basic, straight middle part, we’re now seeing it look a little bit fuzzier and less defined.

Elle advises that this look can be attained by creating sections of the hair and then running a flat iron over them.

The quintessential bedhead look, this organic hair style is both easily attainable and super stylish.

6. Sleek sophistication.

Here’s the surprise! Contrary to the natural and laid-back look that has dominated the fall hair scene, another style worth consideration utilizes hair gel. You can look sleek and professional with this slicked-back look.

In particular, stylists have been gelling the top of the hair and either letting the rest of the hair fall naturally as seen with Emilio Pucci or pulling it back into a half ponytail as seen with Cushnie Et Ochs.

The gel-backed look makes you appear put-together, but allowing the rest of your hair to look organic and even slightly messy makes this look a true statement style. This dichotomy of sophisticated versus lazy is dramatic and eye-catching.
