Subway restaurants have been around for a while and you’ve likely “eaten fresh” and grabbed a foot-long sub sandwich there at some point. Not only does the sandwich chain have tons of convenient locations across the world (more than 40,000 restaurants in 102 countries), they’re also pretty healthy, customizable and affordable.

Plus, if you’re a student at Georgia State University or in the Atlanta area, you don’t have to venture far to score yourself some tasty Subway. Last year, Subway opened a location at One12 Courtland — and apartment residents, students and others can all easily stop in and grab a meal or snack.

If you’re a frequent visitor to Subway, here are some hacks you may want to know to maximize your sandwich and overall Subway experience.

Firstly, you can order off the Secret Menu. Some of the items on the Secret Menu include the Chicken Parmesan, which Subway got rid of back in 2010 but many Subway employees say they’ll still make for you if you ask; the Big Philly Cheesesteak; the Pizza Sub (which is what is sounds like); and the Old Cut, which means rather than having the bread sliced from the side, it’s dug into more like a trench from the top and supposedly allows the ingredients to be held in better.

Secondly, if you’re going to have your sub toasted, don’t just have it done to your meat, cheese and bread. Throw some veggies on the sandwich too, like peppers, onions, etc. so they can be toasted along with the rest of the sandwich. Then, once your sandwich is done toasting, you can have the lettuce, dressings, etc. added to the whole thing so those ingredients don’t get toasted.

Thirdly, if you’re trying to watch your calories or carbs, you can go one of two ways when it comes to your bread. You can get a sandwich on Italian white bread, which actually has the lowest calorie count of all the bread options, or you can ask that your Subway sandwich maker scoop out the fluffy insides of the bread so you’re left mostly with the crust to use in your sandwich.

Lastly, there are about 37 million sandwich combinations and you can pretty much make up whatever sandwich you’re in the mood for. So don’t feel like you have to order a sub right off the menu — figure out what you like and are in the mood for and then design your own sandwich so you get what you want the exact way you want it. Trust me, the Subway employees have pretty much heard and made it all so order whatever you want.

Even if you’re more of an occasional Subway eater, you should still look into picking up a Subway rewards card (it’s free) so you earn points on each dollar of your purchase; when you’ve reached enough points, you can redeem them for a free item from the menu. Ask for a rewards card at the checkout and then register it online — and also confirm that the Subway joint you’re most likely to visit participates in the rewards program since some of Subway’s locations don’t.

Additionally, to really get the most out of your Subway experience and save money on your food, flash your student ID to get a 10 percent discount.

Keep these hacks and facts in mind so the next time you stop at a Subway, not only will you be more knowledgeable about what Subway sandwich options are available to you, but you can start saving some money on your meal or snack at each Subway visit. Happy eating!
