You probably thought that once you headed off to college, it meant you’d need to invest in all new dorm/room decor — but there’s actually a bunch of stuff you had in your room as a kid that you could totally use in your apartment or dorm room at college.

Here’s some of your childhood room decor that can make the trip with you to university.

1. Stuffed Animals. Okay, so not all of your childhood stuffed animals should accompany you to college — but a favorite or especially sentimental little furry friend or two is totally fine. You can put them on a shelf or keep them on your bed and it will remind you of home and when you were a kid.

And don’t be worried that you’ll be the only resident on your floor or in your building who brings along a cute stuffed animal; I saw several around dorm rooms my freshman year and after that so you’re for sure not alone in liking a little touch of home lying around. Just make sure they’re not too ratty and have all their parts — otherwise they’ll be kinda gross and weird to have lying around.

2. Glow-in-the-Dark Stars. If you had these on the walls or ceiling of your room as a kid, you know they’re super awesome and can also definitely be brought with you to college. Not only are they easy to stick on but they’ll be pretty easy to peel off at the end of the year too, without taking off any paint.

Additionally, you’ll get a cool glow around your bed and in your room at night, and something to look at when you’re falling asleep. If your roommate likes them too, you can buy multiple packs and hang them all over the ceiling of your room rather than just on your side.

3. Disney and Nickelodeon Decor. What’s old is new again — which means your Disney and Nickelodeon stuff you had as a child and middle schooler may be appropriate to bring with you to college. Everyone likes movies like “Frozen,” “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo,” etc., so if you have bedding and other room decor from home that’s Disney-themed, you can totally bring it with you to college and use it there.

Plus, TV shows like “Spongebob Squarepants” and other Nick series are timeless so if you’ve got room-related things with those characters on them, you can decorate your room at college with those too. With Netflix making a revival of “Full House” and Disney creating “Boy Meets World” spin-off “Girl Meets World,” it’s totally cool to have so-called “kid” stuff in your room at school.

4. Posters. If you’ve got a poster of *NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, “Friends,” and other related posters from when you were young, you may want to consider rolling them up and re-hanging them in your room at university. People still love young boy-band-days Justin Timberlake and his music, and the Backstreet Boys have been touring recently, so if you’ve got posters of bands from the ’90s, they may still be relevant and cool to hang up at college.

TV shows like “Friends” and other shows from the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s are also still popular and talked about so bringing a poster with TV show characters on it to school may be a way to bond with your roomie or others who visit your room, and be a conversation-starter.

5. Wall Decals. You may have had some wall decals on your wall as a kid, like your name, a quote, or some flowers or other art. Those are really common to have hung in rooms at college as they are relatively cheap and easy to hang up and peel off at the end of the year, too. If your decal from home can’t make the trip with you since it may lose its ability to stick to the wall or have been hung for so long that you don’t want to try to remove it, you can definitely purchase a replica or different style to hang in your dorm room or apartment at college.

6. A Nightlight. Nightlights aren’t just for kids and may actually really come in handy in your dorm or apartment as it’ll help you see at night without necessarily having to turn on a bigger lamp or overhead light. The one you had as a kid is fine to bring with you to school if you want, or you can buy a cute little new one to plug in and use at college.

If you’re sharing a room, make sure your roommate is cool with having it on at night and that it won’t disturb their sleep (though it shouldn’t). Having a nightlight will be useful when one of you gets in late and the other is sleeping, making it so turning on a brighter, harsher light isn’t absolutely necessary to see where you’re going.

If you’ve still got some or all of these things you used or had in your room as a child, consider packing them up and taking them with you to use in your room at school — you can still get away with using all of it and it’ll be a nice reminder of your childhood and home to have with you.
