Choosing a job in marketing doesn’t mean pigeonholing yourself into one job. Marketing offers a diverse set of job opportunities for all types of people: creative, people oriented, research analysts. Marketing isn’t just for outgoing people who like to sell things; it is also for people that like collecting data and solving problems.

Marketing is simply trying to figure out an answer to the always changing capitalist market. By looking at some brief descriptions of marketing jobs available, you’ll be able to determine which ones sound best suited for you.

Here are eight different jobs in marketing.

1. Consultant

Consultants, unlike many other jobs which require only a degree or specialization in marketing, require some specialization in something else. A consultant helps people make specific decisions in certain areas that they have extensive knowledge about.

Essentially, a consultant advises their clients about the best routes of action to take based on their previous knowledge and expertise.

2. Advertising

Advertising doesn’t very well narrow down what an advertising marketer does. This is because advertisers are often involved with so many other jobs that it can be difficult to separate. Advertisers work with all the other marketing jobs to create the perfect way to promote and sell a good or service.

They utilize all of the other specialists to coordinate social media, brands, and research to develop an advertisement. Many advertisers will specialize in one form of advertising like print or broadcast, though online advertising is increasing exponentially.

3. Social Media

Your parents may believe that all your time spent on social media is a waste, but it could actually turn into a genuine career. Because more and more people turn to social media for news and updates, the traditional forms of information are dying out.

This means that companies need to utilize and capitalize on the capitalistic effects of social media. People working in social media will usually run an account and post specific pictures, responses, and contests to gain more followers and promote the product or brand.

4. Communications

Like advertising, specifying what someone in communications does is a mixed bag. They do almost everything, but their main goal is to keep everyone within and working with a company in good communication.

This means lots and lots of organization, reminders, and people skills to help avoid conflicts between departments and other companies. Communications workers are crucial especially to large scale companies that must keep many parts working together smoothly.

5. Market Research

For the advertisers and everyone else to do their jobs well, they need to have information and data regarding the success of their advertisements. This is where the market researchers come in. Market researchers are the ones who analyze and collect data on the company’s market campaigns.

They may try out new placements and looks and then decide whether or not this has improved their profit. Market researchers will also conduct surveys and focus groups to get immediate feedback from customers that will then be implemented.

6. Brand Management

Brand managers often work in close contact with the market researchers and social media developers to create the perfect image for their company. They’ll often try out new looks and ideas until they discover a logo and then continue to update it over the years. They’ll oversee the advertisers and the social media managers to make sure their look remains consistent with the overall brand theme. They work to find this brand theme and maintain it.

7. Public Relations

People in public relations work in a very similar way to the communications department. However, where communications workers find the best ways for the company to communicate with each other, public relations managers work to communicate with, you guessed it, the public.

Public relations workers often coordinate press releases and other ways official news is released to the public. It is essential that the company remains in good terms with the public by being careful with correct terms and licensing. If there does happen to be a scandal or issue, it is the job of the public relations department to resolve it.

8. Sales Representative

While many of the other jobs work mainly with corporations and associates, sales representatives have a lot more opportunity to work directly with customers. Sales representatives will speak, usually on a one on one basis, with customers about how the product works and why they should spend money on it.

They must use their own marketing strategies to convince different types of people from all walks of life. Sales representatives must be friendly, personable, and able to deal with the rejection you may face from many customers.

With all that marketing has to offer, finding a job that suits your taste shouldn’t be too difficult. Whatever your interests are, marketing provides great opportunities to create and enhance your career. Choosing marketing will both challenge and reward you.
