Cool Summer Internships You Can Do From Home

By Christine Ascher on April 13, 2017

As the summer looms closer, you may or may not have your summer plans set up. While summer is the perfect time to get some work experience through interning, it can be difficult to find the perfect internship.

One of the most important factors involved in your internship search is probably location and the limitations that it poses. Maybe your dream internship is in New York, but you live in California and don’t want to rent an apartment for the summer, move, and have to sublease your current space.

If that’s the case, there is an easy solution: in a culture dominated by technology, there are many cool and exciting virtual internships available. This offers you the best of both worlds, as you can still get the experience and perks that come with interning, but can do so from the comfort of your own home. Some exciting internships that you might want to check out include:

Trend Privé Magazine

Trend Privé is a fashion magazine looking for a fashion content writer. If you have an interest in fashion journalism, this would be a great opportunity for you to gain some experience in the industry.

The mission of Trend Privé is to “create a world where a fashionable lifestyle and a humanitarian and eco mindset are one and the same.”

They focus on fashions that incorporate natural fabrics and are cruelty-free. Their magazine features subjects such as beauty, fashion, popular culture, interior design, and travel, often with an emphasis on sustainability, meaning you’ll be covering fashion as well as environmental and humanitarian topics.

As an intern, you will commit to writing at least one article per month and will receive feedback to help you improve your writing and individual voice.

National Comedy Center/Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum

If you’re a fan of comedy and entertainment, consider a virtual internship with the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum. The internship spans from the beginning of May through mid-August and requires a commitment of 15 hours per week.

The museum is dedicated to “[preserving] the legacy of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz and [enriching] the world through the healing powers of laughter through its commitment to developing the comedic arts.”

They display some of the replica sets, costumes, and props used in the sitcom I Love Lucy, as well as other memorabilia from the show. As an intern, you will aid in preparations for the museum’s upcoming Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, which takes place August 3through 6 and will feature a variety of comedians, including Jim Gaffigan.

More specifically, the internship involves creating “flyers, graphics, posters, and other marketing materials,” providing content for the museum’s social media accounts, and generally promoting the festival. Though it is a virtual internship, this is an exciting chance to become involved in the entertainment industry.

International Spaceflight Museum

If you enjoy science as well as writing or marketing, you might be the perfect fit to join the International Spaceflight Museum’s Grant Writing Committee as an intern. As an intern for the committee, you will “[research] and [prepare] proposals to be submitted to potential funders.”

The museum itself is dedicated to creating virtual content to educate visitors about space exploration. They use Virtual Reality and 3D models to present their exhibits and are looking for an intern interested in “video games, virtual worlds, or virtual reality” to join their organization.

This is an ideal internship if you have strong writing skills and have a desire to learn more about spaceflight. Though it is an unpaid position, this is a great opportunity to work from home on a subject that is both innovative and exciting.

FV Magazine

FV Magazine “endeavors to showcase the work of some of the world’s best artisans and emerging photographers, stylists, and writers to create a forum that inspires the passionate about the beauty of pop culture, to devour and contribute to its dialogue.”

Their magazine focuses on celebrity interviews and editorial stories. If you’re interested in fashion and pop culture and have some computer programming skills, this position will allow you to combine those abilities into an internship that you can take part in wherever you are. The main responsibilities involved with this position center on maintaining the magazine’s website using HTML and CSS to create the site layout, “[converting] raw images and layouts from a graphic designer into CSS/XHTML themes,” and applying new technologies and industry trends as they develop.

They’re looking for someone with experience using various programming languages, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as experience using WordPress. If you’re tech savvy and good with computers, this will give you a creative way to implement those skills.

Uloop News

Uloop News offers internships that allow you to develop your writing skills by writing articles, typically one or two per week that are at least 800 words long, on a variety of subjects pertaining to college students. Because it’s a virtual internship, this means that you’ll be able to write in whatever circumstances are best for you, whether that means over morning coffee at your local Starbucks or at home in your pajamas late at night.

You also get to focus on subjects that you can relate to; as a college student, you’ll be writing about areas that affect you as well as your readers. Some of the popular areas covered include campus life, politics, fashion, and entertainment.
