6 Ways to Date Yourself This Summer

By Johana Langova on May 12, 2017

Many of us college students tend to feel lonely in the summertime – but we can make that work to our advantage!

When you’re feeling lonely this summer, go do something that makes you happy and makes you learn something new about yourself; after all, what better time than the summer to go out and explore your world and yourself?

No matter how you take your coffee or tea, all that caffeine means you’ve got to drink more water.

 1. Take yourself out on a coffee date.

You may feel awkward at first, going alone to that fancy coffee place downtown without your significant other, but treating yourself to some coffee while you sit inside and watch the world dance by outside the windows is really lovely too. Plus, you get to take a breath and just enjoy the coffee and your thoughts alone.

 2. Go for a walk.

Exploring new, safe places around your city are a good way to find out more about yourself and really take it at your pace. Is there a park you’ve wanted to walk around in or trails that you’ve never gone on before? Maybe there are some little stores downtown that you’ve wanted to look inside of? Or even go on a drive down a road you’ve never been down and see what new places you find and explore those.

3. Make a notebook for your thoughts and ideas.

From writing prompts that you can find online, to sketching the world around you, to writing down something that you can’t stop thinking about, notebooks are a great way to escape into your own world. You can find writing prompts that make you think about things you never have before. You can jot down quotes that you heard other people say that impacted you. The possibilities are endless.

 4. Take a day off from your phone

Try to not look at your phone for at least half a day and do something like crafts or reading without anything distracting you online. Many times we forget to enjoy the quiet of the world, and we don’t have to make dramatic statuses on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to do so. You can, quite honestly, just put our phone aside for an hour or two and really take in our world in a different light without it. You can embrace both technology and the world around us. Just remember, this summer is for you to enjoy. Make the best of it!

 5. Cook for yourself.

You deserve to treat yourself. Making a 3 course meal just for one counts. You can look up easy and healthy recipes online and cook them while you binge-watch that Netflix show you’ve been meaning to see. Or, try to make that cake that you’ve been eyeing at your local bakery or on Pinterest — it doesn’t have to be perfect when you make it either! This is just about trying to make something for yourself.

6. Go someplace you’ve always wanted to go.

Got a place that you’ve always wanted to visit, but none of your friends ever wanted to go with you? Go now! That new trampoline park that opened last semester, why not? Or that slightly shabby thrift store? Go and try on some weird clothes! Don’t be afraid to go out into the world alone — and if you are, just take a deep breath and realize that everyone is too focused on their own world to worry about what you look like when you’re exploring by yourself.
