Olympic Medalist Laurie Hernandez Shares Her Daily Routine

By Elana Goodwin on November 1, 2017

Even Olympic medalists have a daily routine according to a recent press release.

Laurie Hernandez, who spent last summer in Rio de Janeiro winning gold and silver medals with the U.S. “Final Five” Olympic Gymnastics team, has had a busy two years. Though she is not competing on the world stage this year, the 17-year-old has still been plenty active.

An admitted “dancing machine,” whether she is on the balance team, studying for a test or looking into colleges, having a winning daily routine brings balance to her life and gives her an edge.

“Since the Olympics, life has been super amazing and crazy busy,” said Hernandez, who is a paid spokesperson for Alcon DAILIES® contact lenses. “I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved outside of the gym, from winning ‘Dancing with the Stars’ to writing my first book, ‘I Got This.’ No matter the task, bringing home the gold takes preparation and focus. And these days, I approach my training schedule with the same outlook as I do my school work and many other projects so I can become the kind of athlete, student, and role model I want to be in the future.”

Here’s a peek into Laurie’s everyday schedule; you might want to adopt some of her practices into your own daily routine.

Sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep and good quality sleep is super important. Since Laurie rarely sleeps eight hours, she has to make every hour of sleep count. Doing that entails having the right bedding, shutting off her smartphone and, sometimes, sleeping with soothing music or nature sounds in the background. Good sleep increases memory and retention — useful for things from her floor exercise moves to difficult math concepts.

Vision. Laurie always looks for little things that can give her a big advantage. That’s why she wears Alcon DAILIES® AquaComfort Plus® contact lenses to see, look, and feel her best. The daily disposable lenses are not only comfortable, but they are convenient because they don’t require cleaning or disinfecting. The lenses allow Laurie to see clearly when training in the gym and when looking at her digital device.

Music. Music is as vital as sleep and clear eyesight to Laurie. It gets her through the triumphs and challenges of training as well as just the everyday trials of being a teenager. She fills her playlist with favorites and plays them according to her mood, the day’s schedule, and what she wants to accomplish. If music is your thing, try to find ways to include it into your day to help give you a boost and motivate you.

Creativity. Even though she’s an athlete and a student, Laurie loves to use her artistic side. Sometimes she takes a break from her rigorous training and school schedule by channeling her creativity through painting, binge-watching movies, making #AskLaurie Web videos or posting cool photos to social media. This gives her a boost of energy so she can re-focus on her work — and it might do the same for you too.

Dance. If Laurie wasn’t a gymnast, she’d be a professional dancer. And she always makes sure to find the time — no matter the place — to dance. Dancing helps keep her centered and is a way for her to stay in shape between training sessions. You don’t have to be a trophy-winning dancer like Laurie to get your groove on — just put on some dance music and jam. Dancing can actually help clear your mind and bring things into focus.

These are just some things that make up Laurie’s winning routine on and off the mats but they may help you too so consider adding them to your daily routine.
