Moving can get stressful, messy, and costly. One major way to help alleviate the chaos that often comes with the moving process is to pick through things and choose what things to get rid of before you move. If you take the time to declutter before moving, you’ll save the time and money that it costs to transport the extra items. Allowing yourself some time to look through your belongings to see what you do not really need in your next living space.

If you are looking to declutter before your next move, here are a few ideas for things to get rid of before you move:

Clothing

Clothing can be pretty tricky when it comes to moving – it’s a lot of belongings to keep track of. From making sure that more delicate items are properly transferred to your next place, or making sure that everything is clean and ready to get packed into storage if need be, clothing can be quite the hassle when it comes to making your next big move.

Minimize the amount of effort you have to put into moving your closet by getting rid of some of the clothing you already have. These can be anywhere from mismatched socks that have not seen the light of day, or clothes that you have outgrown or do not see yourself wearing any time soon. As you begin packing away your closet, look through each and every item and ask yourself if the item is worth taking on to your next living space.

Here are some items that you may want to spend closer attention to during your decluttering session:

  • Bulky items like sweaters and jackets.
  • Shoes – are shoes well past their prime or peak comfort level?
  • Accessories. Things like necklaces can get tangled and hard to store during moves, why not make it easier and get rid of it beforehand?
If you can, try donating gently-used clothing that you are getting rid of, or even selling it if you have enough time. Along with decluttering your wardrobe, take a look at your bedding and towels to see if any are past their use (these can be a great thing to donate to your local animal shelter/rescue!)

School supplies/related objects

Before making your next big move, it is important to look through your old school stuff to declutter anything that is not worth keeping. Think back to your latest semester – do you really need all those loose-leaf papers of half-written assignments, class notes, or class handouts? Put time into recycling old class materials that you do not see yourself using in the future – loose papers, notebooks, and textbooks. Moving is the perfect time to declutter textbooks, whether it means donating them or reselling them to get money back.

Go through your other school supplies, such as pens, pencils, sticky notes, and see if there are any items that you could declutter by throwing out or donating. You would be surprised at the amount of dried up pens or highlighters you could find hidden around your belongings.

Kitchen supplies/food

Another area that needs some serious decluttering before your next big move is your kitchen. Step into your kitchen space and take a good look at your belongings – appliances, cookware, and even the contents of your fridge – in order to see what you can get rid of. If you don’t cook often, you might want to consider cutting back on the number of dishes and cookware you are planning to take with you. Unless they hold serious value, things like mugs can end up cluttering your cupboard regardless of where you live – why not change that before moving to your next living space? You don’t really need multiple pots and pans of similar sizes if you are the type to not cook often.

On a similar note, take a look at every appliance you own and decide whether it is worth taking to your next living space. Do you really need a toaster oven and a toaster? Both a crockpot and an instant pot? Or a Keurig and a coffee pot? Multiple appliances can take up a lot of counter space and cutting back can make moving much easier and the counters of your next living space less cluttered.

Look in your fridge, freezer, and pantry to see if there are items not worth taking along with you to your next place. Of course, take groceries that are still good and of use to you, but moving is the perfect time to clear out things that have been forgotten on shelves and at the back of your pantry. Thinks that are often left unchecked are the contents of your freezer, sauces like hot sauces or salad dressings, canned goods, and box items.

Taking time to get rid of some belongings before you move to your next place can make the process a lot more efficient.
