Whether you’re living in an apartment on your own or sharing a house, it can often be difficult to fit everything you need into an undersized kitchen. With only a few cabinets and drawers, you may be wondering how you’re going to squeeze all your pots, pans, utensils, and food into such a small area. You aren’t the only one! Many people have the same issue of and tiny kitchen and there are lots of gadgets and solutions out there to maximize your kitchen space so you’ll have enough room for everything.

1. Use your under-the-shelf space

One of the places you might not be using to its fullest potential is the space underneath your cabinets or shelves. Underneath the shelves? That’s right. Often there is a good amount of space between the end of your shelving and the countertop that is just being left open. You can use up this space, especially if your countertop is empty, for a little extra storage. There are lots of shelving or hanging units you can buy that hook onto your shelves that you can hang things from. It could be a great option for storing mugs, kitchen utensils, or even small pots and pans. Anything that doesn’t fit or stack nicely in a cabinet may be better off stored this way!

2. Try a shelf riser

You probably know what risers are if you’ve ever been to a sporting event, but have you ever thought about putting some in your kitchen? Likely not. Shelf risers are a great way to maximize space so that you’re making the most out of your shelves. For instance, if you have shelves that are really tall, you may notice that there is loads of extra space between your small stack of plates and the next shelf up. A shelf riser can solve this problem by giving you an extra shelf within the shelf! Now you can stack double the kitchenware in the same space. Additionally, you can also get risers with multiple levels for displaying smaller items like spice containers. Ever have the issue of taking out every spice container before you find the right one? Having a riser for these can make your life a whole lot easier.

3. Install a kitchen rail

Do you have wall space in your kitchen that isn’t serving a purpose? Adding a kitchen rail to your wall could be a great tool to effectively use up that extra space and add an interesting décor element. Kitchen rails work a lot like bathroom rails do and are great for hanging items that don’t neatly store into drawers or cabinets. Think things like ladles, spatulas, saucepans, measuring cups, and more. Besides just looking cool, kitchen rails are also great for easy access so you can hang the tools you use often right next to the stove to grab in a pinch. No more rustling through every drawer to find the tool you need!

Just be sure that you check with your landlord or homeowner before installing a kitchen rail into your home. It will damage the wall so you may need special permission.

4. Utilize your cabinet doors

Maximizing space, in any capacity, is usually about using up vertical space that is going unused. What vertical space is going unused in most kitchens? Cabinet doors. Cabinet doors are great for concealing whatever unorganized or messy objects might be hiding in your kitchen, but they’re also good for a lot more than that. Try out some organizers that you can place over your cabinet doors. They act like little mini-shelves and are great for storing small items in an easy-to-reach place. These are great for the cabinets under your sink and can be used for easy access dish soap and washing machine detergent, among other things. You could also use these organizers for things like spice containers, salt and pepper, or small cups and glasses. Just be sure that when you’re installing these that you are choosing cabinets that aren’t flush against shelving or other solid objects otherwise you’ll run into some issues with actually closing your cabinets. Try out different materials and sizes and see what works best for you!

Making the most out of your kitchen is mostly about creativity. While you may look at your tiny kitchen and dismay at the lack of space, try thinking instead about the many different configurations and tricks you can try to make the most out of it. There are lots more ideas to be found when it comes to kitchen organization that you can find all over the internet. Don’t be afraid to try things that are a little out of the box because they might just end up working great for you. Still trying to save space and money?
