Too Old to Carve Pumpkins?

By Abby Kutscher on September 30, 2012

October is upon us once again! For many, that means that it is time to celebrate Halloween. While the official holiday doesn’t occur until the end of the month, plenty of people (myself included) enjoy celebrating all month long. Halloween means costumes, candy, apple cider, spooky movies, and of course—pumpkins!

Think you are too old to carve pumpkins? Well, think again. Decorating pumpkins doesn’t have to mean carving scary faces. It is actually a great way to express your creativity and decorate your house or dorm room. Thanks to some inspiration from pinterest.com, here are three cool ideas for decorating pumpkins this year in a more “grown-up” manner!

  1. Carve pumpkins to reflect your house number or room number. If you have a house, purchase several large pumpkins, one for each number of your street address. And if you have a dorm room, you can buy smaller pumpkins for the same purpose, but to reflect your room number. Outline the digit on each pumpkin and then carve it out. If you have a dorm room, then chances are that you can’t have candles. But have no fear! You can buy battery operated candles that will give the same effect. Place a candle inside of each pumpkin and then stack them or place them in a row on your porch or outside of your door to reflect your house/room number.
  2. Decorate a pumpkin with glitter for a cool decoration to place on your table, desk, or windowsill. You can do this with one large pumpkin or several smaller pumpkins. Cover the entire surface of the pumpkin with glue and then roll it in glitter. It’s that simple! You can do so much with this simple idea—try using colored glitter or pasting the glitter on in patterns.
  3. For another neat decorative pumpkin, you can paint one with chalkboard paint. While chalkboard paint is a tad expensive, the results are undeniably cool. Once you have covered the pumpkin with the paint and have allowed it to dry, you can draw or write on it with white or colored chalk! You can even switch it up as often as you like, because the chalk just brushes off.

Hopefully these ideas have put you in the mood for Halloween and have maybe even inspired some of your own pumpkin-decorating ideas! Happy Halloween and happy decorating! And remember, you are never too old to carve a pumpkin!
