Release Date Set for Stephen King’s Sequel to “The Shining”

By Abby Kutscher on November 6, 2012

Stephen King fans rejoice! The long awaited sequel to 1977’s “The Shining” is set to be released next Fall. On September 24, 2013, “Doctor Sleep” will give fans a chance to see what happened to little Danny Torrance from King’s classic novel (huffingtonpost.com). And for fans of King who haven’t read “The Shining” yet, you now have a little less than a year to complete it and prepare yourself for the sequel.

“The Shining” is one of King’s best novels in both my opinion and in the opinions of many other fans. The novel tells the story of a family who moves to the secluded Overlook Hotel in Colorado for the winter where Jack–the father and husband, as well as the main character of the novel–has accepted a job as caretaker for the off-season. What they don’t know is that the hotel is haunted. The spirits seem to thrive on the young son Danny’s psychic abilities, and soon the evil forces begin to drive Jack mad.

“Doctor Sleep” will catch readers up on what path Danny’s life took after he and his mother escaped the Overlook Hotel. Danny, now a middle-aged man, uses his gift to help people find peace in their final stages of death. As the novel progresses, Danny develops a mentor-like relationship with a twelve year old girl named Abra Stone who has the same abilities or “shine” that he himself possesses. Now, he must try to save her and others like her from a group called “The True Knot.” This group gains immortality by feeding off of the force that children with the ability to shine produce when they are being tortured to death.

As the synopsis released by Stephen King’s UK publishers states, “This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of ‘The Shining’ and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon” (huffingtonpost.com). So mark your calendars for September 24, 2013, and you too can finally discover what became of the little boy who escaped the horrors of the Overlook Hotel in King’s classic novel “The Shining.”
