Believe me, I work at a grocery store in between a poor neighborhood and campus, and I have dealt with every type of individual, as well as every pace of business—slow, on and off, and ridiculously busy.

That, combined with being stuck in a job where you’re forced to stand up all day can take a toll on your physical, as well as mental stability.

No matter if it’s retail or fast food, here are some solid tips to get your through your next eight hour day.

1. Clean when you’re not busy. No one said this would be a pleasant task (especially if your work place is trashed), but  hey, it’s better than sitting there, staring at the clock, wondering how you’re going to survive the next seven hours. Plus, it gives you a sense of pride because you’re cleaning up a dirty area, making it inviting not only for the customer, but ultimately, for you.

 2.  Don’t take anything personally.

If a customer insults you, you should remember not take it personally.

Explain that you were trying to make the situation right and that you’re sorry for the mishap.

Offer the customer some sort of incentive to want to return. Remember that at the end of the day, your sanity matters more.

3.  Do try to be helpful.

Ask your supervisor is anyone needs a break covered, for example. It will make you look like a super nice person and you’ll feel useful.

4.  Be happy! You’re getting paid to be there.

Whether or not you think it’s worth being there for the pay is up to you. But while you’re there, even when you’re super annoyed, remember that you are getting paid to be there, so it’s not a complete waste of your time at least.

5.  Be observant.

Especially if you work in an area where a lot of people shoplift, you should try to prevent it before it happens.

Also, when scanning IDs for college kids that are buying alcohol, try to see if the ID is fake before you type in the birth date. Ask your supervisor what a fake ID looks like if you’re not sure.
