Have Yourself A Healthy Little Christmas

By Gilmarie Brioso on December 25, 2012

The Christmas holiday means a lot of things for me: Jesus’ birthday, giving and receiving gifts and food! That’s right, I can always expect a full belly on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I know for su

re that there will be Costa Rican tamales and arroz con leche (rice pudding) from my mother, Dominican pasteles from my Grandmother and pernil for dinner. This of course isn’t the healthiest of foods, but there is a way to incorportate yummy goodness into your desserts while keeping an eye on the calories.

A recent article from Greatist.com does just this. They present 10 healthy holiday desserts, amoung them are:

Low-Fat Gingerbread Cookies via SkinnyTaste
These cute cookies have less than half the fat of the traditional version, with applesauce subbing in for butter. Plenty of molasses and ginger flavor means you won’t miss the extra calories.”

Pistachio Sugarplums via Katie at the Kitchen Door
Fun fact: sugarplums don’t actually contain their namesake purple fruit. These lighter treats are made of dried fruit, nuts, and plenty of holiday spices. They also contain brandy, so keep these sugary treats at the adult table.”

Candyland Peppermint Bark via Chocolate Covered Katie
Looking for a vegan, gluten-free candy to serve at the annual holiday party? This recipe gets its oomph from coconut butter. For a more chocolaty version, use the Hot Chocolate Butter on the recipe page.”

Christmas Pudding via The Healthy Chef
Get all Dickensian this holiday season without needing a corset to hold it all in. These Brit-style puddings are made of chopped dried fruit, almond flour, and plenty of cinnamon and nutmeg.”

Gluten Free Chocolate Fudge Crinkle Cookies via Bakerita
Pop these chewy chocolate cookies into the oven for a super-rich treat that’s perfect for partygoers with allergies to gluten or dairy (just make sure to pick up some dairy-free chocolate chips!)”

So prepare these for tonight’s grand Christmas dinner and feel a little less guilty in the morning.

Happy Holidays!
