Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: The Strangers Sharing the Experience with You

By Maggie O'Shea on March 12, 2013

With Spring Break on the horizon for many anxious college students, travel is certainly on the brain. After eagerly packing up your bags, you may find yourself ready to travel the world. Whether it’s a plane, train, or automobile, you are probably going to find yourself sharing your leg and arm space with strangers.

As I sat on a Megabus making its way from Cincinnati to the Windy City, I found myself with plenty of time to creepily observe everyone around me. As I sat there, I began thinking about the stereotypical passengers you often happen upon in your travels, and, mostly to amuse myself, I came up with the following list. So here is my list of the interesting strangers you may find yourself next to:

1.)  The T.M.I. Girl: By the end of the trip, you know this girl’s life story. You are not her intended audience, but even as a bystander, you know her past successes and failures, and the focus is always on some guy that has put her on a continuous emotional rollercoaster. This is free entertainment and amusement only if you’re in a certain mood or have missed the most recent Real Housewives of whatever city.

2.)  The Loud Busybody: This person’s presence is undeniable. Whether they’re chomping, chewing, sniffling, or coughing, you cannot mentally escape this passenger unless you blast your music. They are the stranger that talks on the phone from start to finish and may evolve into the T.M.I. passenger.

3.)  The Smelly Stranger: Enough said.

4.)  The Mysterious Stranger: This is the passenger that you feel you have a connection with regardless of the fact that you have never spoken and probably never will. You come up with possible conversation starters in your head, which leads you down a slippery slope of your nonexistent future together. This may be embarrassing, but the potential for a good story is always there.

5.)  The Tall Girl With The Baseball Cap Who Obnoxiously Does Her Nails: I am that girl on this trip. In my defense, I had no time the night before and hastily painted my nails, but the girl in front of me did not appreciate it at all, to say the least. I may have also been the girl who kicked her chair a few times, but she was also the girl who kept her light on the whole night.
